The next time you brew tea from a medicinal herb like poppy or coffee plant leaves, this technology explains why certain parts of the plant, like roots versus leaves, pack a much stronger dose than others.
Plants make chemical compounds called alkaloids that can act as powerful medicines, but different parts of the same plant often contain wildly different amounts. Researchers reviewed three imaging techniques that let scientists take a thin slice of a root, stem, or leaf and see a color-coded map of exactly where these compounds are concentrated, down to the microscopic level. This matters for figuring out which parts of medicinal plants to harvest and how these drugs move through the body once consumed.

Three main mass spectrometry imaging techniques are used for alkaloid mapping: SIMS-MSI, MALDI-MSI, and DESI-MSI, each with distinct strengths for tissue analysis.
Alkaloids are especially well-suited to this imaging approach because they respond strongly in positive ion detection mode.
The techniques reveal micro-regional accumulation patterns of alkaloids in specific plant organs (roots, stems, leaves) and in animal tissues without requiring chemical labeling.
