Some pest-control wasps handle heavy metal pollution better than others

If you rely on beneficial insects to keep pests off your tomatoes, the soil quality in your garden could quietly be reshaping which natural predators actually stick around and do their job.

Tiny parasitic wasps called Trichogramma are used by farmers as a natural, chemical-free way to kill crop pests, but heavy metals like cadmium can build up in soil from industrial pollution and fertilizers. Researchers tracked two different wasp species over five generations of cadmium exposure and found one species actually got a short-term reproductive boost from the stress, almost like a stress-induced pep-up, but both types eventually lost some of their pest-fighting power the longer the contamination continued. This means the specific wasp species you choose for pest control could matter a lot in soil that has metal contamination.
