Peanut shells turned magnetic sponges soak up textile dye pollution

The peanut shells you'd normally toss in the compost or trash can be turned into a cheap, magnet-retrievable filter that pulls toxic dye out of contaminated water, showing how garden and food waste can double as pollution cleanup tools.

Researchers took peanut shells, a common food waste, and turned them into charcoal-like material called biochar. They then added tiny magnetic particles and a coating made from chitosan (a substance from crab and shrimp shells) to create a material that grabs onto a harmful red dye used in textiles and pulls it out of water. Because the material is magnetic, it can simply be lifted out with a magnet, cleaned, and used again, making it a practical and affordable way to treat polluted wastewater.

The chitosan-magnetic biochar composite (CS-MPSB) removed up to 307 mg of Congo red dye per gram of material, compared to 259 mg/g for plain peanut shell biochar and 282 mg/g for the magnetic version alone

The material has a high surface area of 248.9 m2/g with tiny mesopores (3.76-3.77 nm wide), and dye removal worked best at a mildly acidic pH of 5.0

The composite showed strong reusability and tolerated salty water conditions, and its maximum dye-holding capacity (322.6 mg/g) improved at higher temperatures, indicating an energy-favorable reaction
