Yam gel and licorice compound repair worn-out spinal discs in goats

The yam vine climbing your trellis and the licorice root steeping in your tea both contain compounds now shown to rebuild a shock-absorbing tissue that wears out with age, proof that garden and pantry plants keep turning up in unexpected corners of medicine.

Researchers made a squishy, sponge-like gel from yam starch and combined it with a licorice plant compound called isoliquiritigenin, packed inside tiny iron-based particles that mop up cell-damaging molecules. When implanted into degenerated spinal discs in rats and goats, this yam-and-licorice patch calmed inflammation, stopped cells from aging prematurely, and helped the disc rebuild its cushiony structure.
