Researchers studied a plant called Osbeckia opipara, long used in traditional Miao medicine, to figure out why it seems to help people with ulcerative colitis, a painful gut disease. They found two natural plant compounds, gallic acid and ellagic acid, that activate a receptor in gut cells, which then triggers a chain reaction to repair the intestinal lining and calm inflammation. In mice with colitis, the plant extract restored healthy gut bacteria and rebuilt the gut's protective barrier, and blocking that receptor undid all the benefits, confirming exactly how the plant works.
