The waxy coating on tobacco and tomato leaves in your garden contains solanesol, a compound now shown to repair liver and kidney damage in diabetic mice by reshaping their gut bacteria.

Solanesol is a natural substance found in plants like tobacco, tomatoes, and potatoes that belong to the nightshade family. Scientists gave it to diabetic mice and found it lowered blood sugar, cut down harmful fat buildup in the liver, calmed inflammation in the pancreas and kidneys, and boosted good gut bacteria, all while working through several different pathways in the body at once. It performed alongside the standard diabetes drug metformin, hinting that this plant compound might one day help treat diabetes in people too.
