The four o'clock flower blooming in your evening garden, along with the quercetin found in onions, apples, and capers, just got new scientific backing as a defense against UV skin damage, giving home gardeners another reason to value the plants they're already growing.

Researchers wanted to find natural substances that could protect skin from sun damage by keeping cell 'power plants' called mitochondria healthy. They used artificial intelligence to test a bunch of compounds, including quercetin (found in many fruits and vegetables), spermidine, and an extract from the four o'clock flower, and found that combining several of them worked better than any single compound alone. The best mix reduced aging signs and even helped tail regeneration in sun-damaged zebrafish and mice, hinting it could someday show up in sunscreens or anti-aging skincare.
