Crop-duster crash data reveals maintenance, not pilots, as top risk

The next time you see a crop duster pass low over a field near your garden, this study is a reminder that engine upkeep and farm oversight matter more to that pilot's safety than their flying skill.
Scientists in Brazil looked at eight years of crash reports from small planes used to spray farm fields and built a digital map connecting all the different causes. They found that engine failures and weak supervision by aviation companies were bigger drivers of crashes than mistakes made by the pilots themselves, which suggests regulators should focus more on maintenance checks than pilot training alone.
