Peanut waste liquid fertilizer boosts potato harvests and soil life

If you've ever composted scraps to feed your garden, this shows how a food-processing byproduct can replace a chunk of synthetic nitrogen fertilizer and still grow bigger potatoes with healthier soil microbes.
Researchers took peanut meal, a leftover from oil pressing, and used enzymes to break it down into a nutrient-rich liquid. When they swapped 10% of the usual nitrogen fertilizer for this liquid on potato fields, the potatoes grew bigger and the harvest jumped by nearly a third. The soil also ended up with more organic matter and a richer community of beneficial bacteria compared to using plain synthetic fertilizer.
Key Findings
Optimized enzyme conditions (4.5 hours, pH 8.6, 54.9°C) achieved a 25.02% protein hydrolysis degree in peanut meal, yielding a liquid rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter.
Replacing 10% of inorganic nitrogen fertilizer with the hydrolysate (M10) increased total potato yield by 26.63% and large-potato yield by 30.90%, with tuber nutrient accumulation up 19-32%.
Higher substitution rates improved soil quality: M20 raised soil pH by 5.70% and organic matter by 13.48%, while M15 boosted alkaline-hydrolyzable nitrogen by 5.70%, and M10 increased beneficial soil bacterial diversity.
