If you grow or forage medicinal herbs, the same climate shifts reshuffling their wild ranges will eventually decide whether your favorite plant thrives in your garden or struggles to survive there.
Researchers are using a tool called species distribution modeling, which combines known plant locations with data on climate, soil, and landscape to figure out exactly where a species can and can't grow. For medicinal plants used in traditional Chinese medicine, this helps predict how shrinking or shifting habitats under climate change could affect the availability and quality of these healing herbs, and guides efforts to protect them before it's too late.

Species distribution models combine known plant location data with multi-source environmental variables (climate, topography, soil, biotic factors) to predict geographic ranges.
These models can project potential plant distributions across historical, current, and future climate scenarios, and rank which environmental factors matter most.
Environmental factors affecting distribution also influence photosynthesis, secondary metabolite production, and reproduction, directly impacting medicinal plant yield and quality.
