Women know pollinators best but rarely lead conservation efforts

The person who notices exactly when a squash blossom opens or when bees are working a hedgerow is often doing the kind of close observation that formal conservation planning tends to ignore, and this study shows how much gets lost when that knowledge isn't in the room.
Researchers talked with 128 women and men in 16 farming communities in Ghana about what they know about pollinators like bees and the plants they depend on. Women turned out to know a lot about flowering times and how to harvest crops without hurting pollinators, while men focused more on managing fires and keeping trees around. But even where local conservation groups exist, the people making decisions and leading meetings were still mostly men, so women's know-how rarely shaped the rules.
