Barley plants inherit cold toughness from stressed ancestors, study finds

If a late frost hits your garden this spring, the seeds you save from tougher survivors may actually pass on real cold resilience to next year's crop, not just luck.
Scientists grew barley for three generations and tested what happens when grandparent or parent plants experienced a cold snap. Plants with that ancestral cold exposure grew better, survived colder conditions, and produced more grain than plants with no family history of cold stress, and the effect got stronger the more generations were exposed. The researchers also found specific spots in the barley genome linked to this inherited toughness, which breeders could eventually use to develop more resilient varieties.

Memory-conditioned barley lineages showed higher germination (83.5-86.6% vs 79.0%), survival (77.7-85.5% vs 68.0%), and grain yield (5.04-5.75g vs 4.27g per plant) compared to no-memory lineages under cold stress
