Beneficial soil bacteria help peanuts resist cadmium contamination

If you grow legumes in soil with any history of industrial contamination, this shows that the same root-nodule bacteria that fix nitrogen can also act as a filter, blocking toxic metals from reaching the parts you eat.

Peanuts grown in cadmium-polluted soil normally soak up the toxic metal into their pods, but a specific strain of nodule-forming bacteria called Rhizobium sp. HM13 changes that. The bacteria reshape the community of microbes around the roots and trigger the plant's own chemical defenses, and the effect works best when farmers use less nitrogen fertilizer, letting the plant's natural nitrogen-fixing partnership stay strong and keep cadmium out of the harvest.
