Charcoal soil additive locks up toxic metals, boosts mustard growth

If you garden near old roadways, industrial sites, or in urban soil with a history of contamination, this shows a cheap, plant-based soil amendment can trap lead and cadmium in the dirt instead of letting your vegetables soak them up.

Scientists took charcoal made from burning plant waste, ground it into tiny nanoparticles, and mixed it into soil contaminated with lead and cadmium before growing mustard plants. The treated soil held onto the toxic metals much more tightly, so the plants grew bigger, made more seeds, and absorbed far less lead and cadmium into their roots and shoots compared to plants grown without it. It worked better than plain rice husk powder, the more basic version of the same idea.
