That banana peel you toss in the compost bin contains antioxidant compounds that scientists just showed can shield lung tissue from smoke-related damage in mice.
Researchers took the peel of plantain-type bananas, which most people discard as kitchen waste, and turned it into an ethanol extract loaded with antioxidant compounds like flavonoids and tannins. When mice were exposed to cigarette smoke for two weeks, the ones given the banana peel extract showed noticeably less lung damage than untreated mice, and the effect got stronger at higher doses.
