Winter growth chambers turn one barley seed into 1,500

If you've ever waited a full year for a garden variety to produce enough seed to share, this shows how growers can compress that wait into a single off-season indoor cycle.

Breeders trying to create new barley varieties normally have to wait for each field season to harvest enough seed to keep testing. This study grew barley indoors all winter under bright lights and warm temperatures, packing plants tightly in small pots, and got each plant to produce over 1,500 seeds instead of the usual 30 to 120. That means a single winter of indoor growing can generate enough seed for a full field trial, saving up to two years in developing a new crop variety.
