Dormant viral DNA in our genome may predict cancer survival

Our DNA carries leftover fragments from ancient viral infections, sometimes called endogenous retroviruses. Scientists pooled data from over 9,000 pancreatic cancer patients and found that one specific fragment, called HHLA2, tends to show up alongside stronger immune activity and longer survival, hinting it could become a useful marker doctors check for.

HERV detection rates ranged from 16.7% to about 80% depending on the sequence and lab method used
HERV-H derived HHLA2 was linked to increased CD8+ T-cell infiltration and favorable survival (HR 0.47-0.66), while other markers showed adverse associations (HR 1.26-2.24)
