Organic olive orchards show more antibiotic traces in soil

If you compost manure into your garden beds or shop for organic olive oil assuming it's chemical-free, this study is a reminder that 'organic' fertilizer can carry its own hidden residues, even if the risk here turned out to be low.

Scientists tested soil from olive groves across Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, and Morocco to see if antibiotic residues from manure fertilizer were building up underground. Surprisingly, organically managed groves had more antibiotic traces than conventional ones, likely because they rely more heavily on animal manure instead of synthetic fertilizer. The good news: even where residues showed up, the levels were mostly too low to pose a real risk to people or the environment.
