Fat droplets in plant cells fight off viruses naturally

The wheat and rice on your plate could one day resist devastating viral infections without farmers needing to spray more chemicals or sacrifice yield.

Plant cells contain tiny fat droplets that scientists used to think were just storage blobs for extra lipids. It turns out these droplets are actually front-line soldiers against viruses: when a virus attacks, the droplets multiply, cluster around chloroplasts, and trigger the plant's natural immune alarm system. Boosting droplet production made plants resistant to several different viruses in tobacco relatives, wheat, and rice, and remarkably, the plants didn't grow any slower for it.
