Lab-grown strawberries lose gut bacteria, but scientists can add it back

If you've ever bought a store strawberry transplant that struggled to take root, this research explains why: tissue-culture propagation strips away the microbial partners plants need, and it also shows a fix nurseries could use to send you sturdier starts.

Strawberry plants grown in labs from tiny tissue samples come out looking identical and disease-free, but each round of lab cloning quietly wipes out the helpful bacteria and fungi living inside the plant. Scientists found that reintroducing specific beneficial soil bacteria to these lab-grown strawberries made them grow bigger, survive better once planted in soil, and even produce more of the healthy compounds like flavonoids. It's essentially giving cloned plants back a microbial gut that got lost in the lab process.
