If you grow basil, mint, or ashwagandha for tea or remedies, the soil they're planted in matters as much as the plant itself, since these species readily pull lead, cadmium, and pesticide residues up through their roots.

Researchers reviewed decades of studies on five common medicinal plants, basil, mint, licorice, periwinkle, and ashwagandha, and found that pollution from industry and farming doesn't just sit in the soil around them; it gets absorbed into the leaves and roots people use for herbal remedies. That contamination can weaken the plant's healing compounds and, over time, build up in the bodies of people who drink the teas or take the supplements regularly.
