Iranian shrublands are set to spread fast as climate warms

If you garden in a dry climate or hike arid landscapes, this shows exactly how shrinking rainfall and rising heat can flip an entire landscape from grasses and wildflowers to scrubby, woody cover within a few decades.

Researchers used computer models to predict how plant communities in a dry region of central Iran will shift as the climate warms and rainfall declines. They found that woody shrubs are expected to spread into areas currently dominated by grasses and herbaceous plants, growing by roughly 27% over the next several decades. This kind of shrub takeover, called woody encroachment, can change soil, water, and wildlife patterns across an entire landscape.
