Red fig leaves make better antioxidants and stronger silver nanoparticles

The reddish new growth you might notice on a banyan or fig tree isn't just decorative pigment, it's a sign of a more chemically active leaf packing higher antioxidant power than its green neighbors.
Some fig trees grow leaves that start out red before turning green, and researchers wanted to know if that red color meant anything beyond looks. It turns out the red leaves have supercharged enzymes that neutralize harmful molecules far more efficiently than green leaves, packed with extra phenolics and flavonoids. The team then used these leaf extracts to grow silver nanoparticles, which ended up being better at killing bacteria and mopping up free radicals than the plain leaf extract alone.
Key Findings
Catalase's Km value (a measure of how tightly the enzyme binds its target) dropped from 34.88 to 13.23 mM in red vs green Ficus benghalensis leaves, and from 21.47 to 10.44 mM in Ficus amplissima, showing much better substrate affinity in red leaves.
Silver nanoparticles synthesized from red Ficus benghalensis leaf extract showed 81.16% DPPH radical scavenging activity and produced antibacterial inhibition zones up to 14.9 mm against Enterococcus.
Red leaves in both species contained higher levels of phenolics, flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, and saponins, along with supportive trace elements (Fe, Cu, Mn, Zn) that fuel enzyme activity.
