New AI can spot weeds it has never seen before

The robotic weeders and precision sprayers increasingly used on farms and even in large gardens usually fail when they meet a weed species outside their training data, so a system that flags 'unknown' invaders instead of ignoring them could catch new problem plants before they spread.
Most weed-detecting cameras only recognize weeds they've already been trained on, so anything new slips right past them. This project built a smarter system that also notices when it's looking at something unfamiliar, while still keeping careful track of exactly where the crop plants are so they don't get sprayed or pulled by mistake. It's a practical step toward robots that can weed a field accurately even when new or unusual weeds show up.

The model uses open-set object detection, meaning it can flag weed-like objects it wasn't specifically trained to identify rather than misclassifying or ignoring them
It simultaneously localizes crop plant centers, allowing precise separation of crop from weed for targeted intervention
