Friendly microbes show real promise against banana-killing fungus

If you've ever grown a banana plant or bought one at the store, this soil-borne fungus is the reason banana varieties keep vanishing and why scientists are racing to find microbial allies before it spreads further.
Panama disease is a fungus that lives in soil and kills banana plants from the roots up, and a nasty strain called TR4 has just shown up in new countries including Peru and Venezuela. Researchers looked at 123 studies testing whether helpful microbes, mostly a bacteria called Streptomyces and a fungus called Trichoderma, can protect banana plants, and found these microbial treatments work best when applied multiple times, mixed in teams, and sourced from soil that never grew bananas before. The catch is that most of this research happens in a few countries and hasn't been tested enough in real farm fields, so there's still work to do before it's a dependable fix.
