Plant compounds show promise fighting breast cancer in lab studies

The colorful pigments in berries, tea leaves and grapes that gardeners prize for their antioxidant punch are the same polyphenol compounds researchers are now studying for their ability to interfere with cancer cell signaling.
Scientists reviewed years of research on polyphenols, the natural chemicals that give many plants their color, bitterness and antioxidant power, to see how they affect breast cancer cells. In lab and animal studies, these compounds seem to slow tumor growth, block the spread of cancer cells, and even work together with gut bacteria to influence hormone levels tied to breast cancer. The catch: almost all of this evidence comes from cells and animals, not people, so real clinical trials are still needed before anyone can say polyphenol supplements actually treat cancer.
