Cilantro roots pick up antibiotic-resistant bacteria from wastewater irrigation

If you grow leafy herbs like cilantro with reclaimed or greywater, this study shows resistant bacteria and their genes can travel from the water into the soil, the root zone, and onto the leaves you'd actually eat.
Scientists grew cilantro in two different soil types and watered it with either treated or untreated wastewater, sometimes spiked with antibiotics and disinfectants to mimic contamination. They found that antibiotic-resistant bacteria and the genetic material that spreads resistance built up differently depending on both the soil type and the water quality, and some resistant bacteria even showed up specifically when treated wastewater was used. It's a reminder that reusing wastewater for irrigation, while great for saving water, needs careful monitoring to keep resistant germs out of our food and gardens.
