Yeasts are tiny fungi that live almost everywhere: in soil, water, on plants, and inside animals, but scientists rarely study them because they're so scarce compared to bacteria and other fungi. This global survey looked at tens of thousands of samples and found yeasts in over 90% of them, showing they're far more common than anyone realized, even if they usually make up less than one percent of what's detected. That matters because these overlooked organisms likely help cycle nutrients and support plant growth wherever they turn up.

Yeasts were detected in more than 90% of roughly 44,000 fungal samples from the GlobalFungi database, confirming they are globally widespread.
Yeasts typically make up only about 0.1% of fungal reads, but in about 3% of samples they exceeded 25%, with genera like Aureobasidium, Hanseniaspora, and Saccharomyces dominating nutrient-rich or human-influenced settings.
Cosmopolitan genera such as Vishniacozyma, Solicoccozyma, and Rhodotorula are broadly distributed in nature yet remain underreported in standard microbiome surveys.
