Earthworms and rotating drums make faster, cleaner compost

If you compost at home or tend a community garden, adding worms to your pile isn't just folklore, this study shows they measurably speed up how fast raw plant matter turns into stable, nutrient-rich humus.
Water hyacinth is a fast-spreading water weed that's a headache to get rid of, but composting it usually takes a long time. Researchers tried tumbling it in a rotating drum first, then finishing the job with earthworms, and found the combo turned it into rich, dark humus much faster than composting alone. The finished compost also held onto more nitrogen and trapped harmful metals like copper and zinc so they're less likely to leach out into soil or water.
Key Findings
Combining rotary drum composting with earthworms (Eisenia) produced 44.33% organic matter decomposition and boosted nitrogen content by 124%
Humic acid content rose 210% and the humic-to-fulvic acid ratio increased 76.57% compared to drum composting alone
After 27 days, bioavailable copper dropped 38.71% and zinc leaching potential fell 63.01%
