Traditional Indonesian plant remedies show promise against drug-resistant malaria

The same instinct that leads Indigenous healers to test bark, roots, and leaves against fever is the one gardeners use when they notice which plants seem to repel pests or soothe a sting, and this review shows that centuries of plant-based trial and error can point straight to potent new medicines.
Researchers combed through decades of Indonesian ethnobotanical knowledge, records of which plants Indigenous communities traditionally used to treat malaria fever, and matched that wisdom against modern lab testing. Out of over 200 candidate plants, they isolated 146 distinct chemical compounds, and a handful turned out to kill malaria parasites at incredibly low doses, in some cases twenty times more potent than the standard malaria drug chloroquine. It's a reminder that traditional plant knowledge often points scientists toward real, testable medicine.
