If you've ever wondered why some weeds vanish after you till the soil while others pop right back up, this study explains it: burying seeds even half a centimeter deep completely stops one weed from emerging but barely slows the other.
Researchers tested how light, temperature, salt, and soil pH affect two weeds that plague salad greens: burning nettle and common groundsel. Burning nettle turned out to be a picky germinator, needing complete darkness and mild temperatures and barely surviving any burial at all, while common groundsel sprouts happily in light, tolerates saltier and more acidic conditions, and only needs to sit right at the soil surface to succeed. Knowing these preferences means farmers and gardeners can time soil disturbance and weeding to catch each weed when it's most vulnerable.
Key Findings
Burning nettle germinated best in complete darkness at 25/15C (90%) but had zero germination at 15/5C or 35/25C, while common groundsel preferred light and reached 96% germination at 25/15C.
Common groundsel tolerated much harsher conditions than burning nettle, surviving up to 250 mM salt and -1.0 MPa osmotic stress versus 200 mM and -0.6 MPa for burning nettle, and germinating over 97% across pH 4-10.
Burial depth mattered enormously: burning nettle emergence dropped below 1% once buried at any depth, while common groundsel reached 90% emergence from the sand surface but failed entirely past 0.5 cm burial.
