Friendly soil bacteria boost wheat's protein and mineral content

If you grow wheat, grains, or any garden crop in heavy clay soil, this shows how a simple microbial seed treatment can coax more nutrition out of the same patch of ground without dumping on more fertilizer.

Scientists dusted wheat seeds and soil with three types of helpful bacteria called Bacillus, the same family of microbes found naturally in healthy soil. When farmers applied both the seed and soil treatments together, the wheat grew more protein-rich grain, absorbed more phosphorus, and in one location even loaded up on calcium all on its own, without needing extra fertilizer. The bacteria worked best as a helper alongside regular fertilizer rather than a full replacement, and the effect depended a lot on what kind of soil the wheat was growing in.
