The stubborn weed seeds that keep resprouting in your garden despite years of pulling aren't being unlucky, they're following a dormancy strategy tied to their family and whether they're annual or perennial, so knowing which is which tells you whether cold, light, or patience will finally break their germination code.
Scientists pulled together data from 252 studies on 81 common weeds to figure out why some seeds sprout right away while others sit dormant in the soil for years. They found that a weed's family tree and whether it lives one season or many are the biggest clues to how deep its dormancy runs, and that different weeds need different wake-up calls, like a cold winter, a hormone nudge, or a scratched seed coat, before they'll finally germinate. Knowing these patterns could help gardeners and farmers time weeding or herbicide use for when it actually works.
Key Findings
Analysis of 252 studies covering 81 weed species across 22 families found most families show over 70% seed dormancy right after maturity, with Plantaginaceae, Convolvulaceae, Brassicaceae, and Poaceae dormancy highest and Onagraceae and Cyperaceae lowest.
Annual weeds tend toward more intense dormancy, while perennial weeds hold dormancy longer; seeds maturing in spring and summer stay dormant longer and more strongly than those maturing in fall.
Cold stratification and hormone treatments best break physiological dormancy, while physically scarifying the seed coat is required to break physical dormancy.
