Decades of same-field wheat cuts yields, but sprays help recoup losses

If you've ever wondered why farmers rotate crops instead of just planting wheat in the same spot every year, this study puts a number on it: continuous wheat lost over 40% of its yield compared to rotated fields, and even the best fungicides and pest control only clawed back about two-thirds to three-quarters of that loss.

Since 1967, researchers in Poland have been growing winter wheat on the same plots year after year to see what happens when you skip crop rotation. The wheat grown without rotation produced way less grain, but it packed more protein, gluten, and minerals like zinc into each kernel. Spraying to control pests and disease and picking a better variety helped recover a good chunk of the lost yield, but nothing beat simply rotating crops.
