The herbal supplement on your shelf claiming to contain a specific desert plant can now be checked against a genetic reference, since researchers just proved which DNA snippets can tell nearly identical species apart with up to 100% accuracy.

Researchers collected 56 medicinal plants from across the UAE and read three different short stretches of their DNA, creating a reference library that works like a genetic fingerprint. When they combined these DNA readouts with a smart computer classification method, they could correctly identify almost every plant species, even ones that look nearly identical to each other. This kind of library helps verify that herbal medicines actually contain what their label says and gives conservationists a tool to track and protect these plants.

397 high-quality DNA sequences were generated from 146 specimens across 55 medicinal plant species using three genetic markers: rbcL, matK, and ITS2.

Machine learning (Support Vector Machine) classification dramatically outperformed traditional methods, reaching 96.82% accuracy for rbcL and 100% accuracy for both matK and ITS2.

Combining rbcL+matK, matK+ITS2, or all three markers together achieved perfect (100%) species resolution, though Zygophyllum and Suaeda genera remained difficult to distinguish with any single marker.
