Vermiculite-coconut fiber mix grows better cucumbers, fights root pests

If you grow cucumbers in containers or a greenhouse, swapping potting soil for a vermiculite-cocopeat blend could mean bigger harvests and fewer of the root-knot worms that stunt and kill vine crops.

Researchers tested 13 different potting mixes on greenhouse cucumbers, from plain soil to perlite, sand, and various combinations. A 50/50 blend of vermiculite and cocopeat (the fibrous coconut husk material) won on every measure: longer vines, more flowers that turned into fruit, bigger harvests, and far less damage from root-knot nematodes, tiny worms that attack roots and are notoriously hard to control in soil.
