Old exhaust filters can be turned into liquid plant fertilizer

The charcoal-like filters that scrub factory fumes usually end up in landfills, but this research shows they can be rinsed into an iron, potassium, and magnesium fertilizer while the carbon itself gets a second life absorbing more pollutants.
Factories use activated carbon filters to trap harmful gases, and once those filters are used up, they're normally thrown away. Researchers tried washing the spent carbon with water, acid, and an alkaline solution to pull out the trapped nutrients, and found that a mild alkaline rinse released the most iron, potassium, and magnesium, while a plain water rinse kept the carbon's pores intact so it could be reused as a filter again. When they tested the rinsed-out liquids on barley seeds, the water rinse actually helped roots grow longer, while the alkaline rinse held roots back.
