Organic and conventional spinach farms host similar soil worm diversity

The tiny worms living in your garden soil, invisible but abundant, are a report card on soil health, and this study shows that switching to organic methods doesn't automatically boost that score.

Researchers looked at microscopic worms called nematodes living in the soil of spinach farms in Kenya, comparing organic and conventional growing methods. These worms are great indicators of soil health because some eat bacteria, some eat fungi, and some even eat plant roots. Surprisingly, the organic and conventional farms had roughly the same mix and diversity of these soil worms, even though a few individual types leaned one way or the other.

394 amplicon sequence variants representing 73 nematode genera were identified across organic and conventional spinach farms in Embu County, Kenya.

Plant-parasitic and fungus-eating nematodes trended higher in conventional farms, while bacteria-eating, predator, and omnivore nematodes trended higher in organic farms, but none of these differences were statistically significant (p > 0.05).

No significant differences were found in alpha or beta diversity between the two farming systems, indicating similar overall nematode community complexity.
