Tropical tree compound targets cancer cells, spares healthy ones

The same rainforest trees that folk healers have used for generations are now revealing a molecule that attacks cancer cells through multiple pathways at once, a reminder that traditional plant knowledge keeps pointing modern medicine toward real leads.

Scientists have been studying a natural chemical called goniothalamin, found in tropical Goniothalamus trees that people have used in traditional medicine for generations. In lab dishes and animal tests, it kills a wide range of cancer cells, including breast, colon, liver, and blood cancers, while barely affecting normal healthy cells. Researchers are now tweaking the molecule's chemical structure to make stronger, more targeted versions, though it still needs a lot more testing before it could become an actual medicine.
