Rwanda's irrigation lags far behind its farmland potential

Researchers looked at how Rwanda has expanded irrigation since 2010 and found that farmers are only using a small slice of the land that could be irrigated. Worse, most of the irrigated fields still use old, inefficient watering systems that waste a lot of water. The study warns that some eastern parts of the country are heading toward serious water shortages by 2035 to 2050 unless Rwanda adopts better technology and water management practices.

By 2024, only 72,913 hectares were irrigated, just 14.5% of Rwanda's 501,509-hectare irrigable potential.
About 70% of equipped irrigation areas still use low-efficiency traditional systems with only 50-60% water use efficiency.
Eastern catchments (Muvumba, Upper Akagera, Lower Akagera) face acute water stress, with irrigation demand projected to approach renewable water limits by 2035-2050; peak maize irrigation need at the Mpanga scheme was 230.8 mm per decade.
