If you've ever watched a heat wave wilt your vegetable beds, this points to a plant-based spray, made from leaf extract and crab-shell chitosan, that helped barley germinate 30% better under 35-40°C heat.
Researchers mixed pomegranate leaf extract with two natural plant-based polymers (chitosan and sodium alginate) and tested it on barley seeds and seedlings. The combo boosted germination, made leaves greener and richer in protein and protective compounds, helped plants shrug off heat stress, and even fought off bacteria and fungi. It's an early sign that natural plant extracts paired with biodegradable coatings could someday replace some synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

Combined pomegranate-biopolymer treatment raised barley germination from 60% to 80% under normal conditions and up to 90% under 35-40°C heat stress
Treated plants showed higher chlorophyll (12.83 to 28.17 SPAD units), protein, proline, nitrogen, and antioxidant activity (DPPH IC50 dropped from 0.307 to 0.106 mg/mL)
The extract showed antimicrobial activity with inhibition zones up to 22.5mm against Candida albicans, 20.0mm against E. coli, and 18.5mm against Staphylococcus aureus
