One gene controls cucumber's prickly skin and pest defense

The bumpy spines on a fresh cucumber aren't just texture, they're a chemical defense system, and this gene is the switch that builds them and helps the plant fend off aphids.

Cucumbers are covered in tiny spines and waxy hairs that shape how they look and how well they resist pests. Researchers found a single gene, called CsESR1, that tells the plant to grow these structures on its stems, leaves, and fruit skin. When they used gene editing to switch it off, the cucumbers turned smooth and shiny, but the plants also lost some of their natural ability to fight off aphids.
