Truffle fungi may travel on the wind, not just in animal guts

The mushrooms and truffle-like fungi partnering with the trees in your yard or local woods have a hidden escape route through the air, which helps explain how these forest partnerships spread and adapt as landscapes change.

Truffles grow underground and scientists long assumed animals like squirrels had to dig them up and eat them to spread their spores elsewhere. This study set up air traps alongside soil samples at eight US sites and found truffle spores showing up in the air about a fifth of the time, sometimes matching soil samples found dozens of miles away. It turns out truffle spores that catch the wind tend to be smaller than average, suggesting some truffle species have quietly evolved a second way to travel.
