Bamboo's knotty parts need a different paint recipe

If you've ever refinished bamboo flooring or furniture and watched the coating peel first at the joints, this study explains why: bamboo's node regions are structurally different from the smooth internode sections and need tailored treatment, not a one-size-fits-all coat.
Bamboo isn't uniform like a plank of pine; it has hard knotty 'node' sections and smoother 'internode' sections, plus different textures on its outer and inner surfaces. When manufacturers coat flattened bamboo panels with protective paint, scientists found that simply piling on more coating doesn't make it stick better everywhere. In fact, the internal knotty regions responded unpredictably, doing best with a medium amount of coating rather than the thickest layer, because too much coating actually creates more stress where the paint meets the bamboo.
Key Findings
Coating thickness increased from about 50.6 μm to 60.8 μm as the applied load rose from 60 to 100 g/m², but the increase wasn't proportional and didn't translate into steadily better adhesion.
The inner-internode region showed a non-monotonic adhesion response, peaking at 0.47 MPa pull-off strength at 80 g/m² before dropping to 0.22 MPa at 100 g/m².
Finite-element stress modeling showed the weakest-performing region in real tests wasn't the region with the highest simulated interfacial shear stress, meaning local stiffness and porous structure matter more than stress alone.
