A cell recycling protein secretly directs how plant cells divide

Every leaf, root, and stem in your garden grows by cells dividing in precisely the right place, and this study reveals a previously unknown molecular GPS system that makes that precision possible.

Before a plant cell splits into two, it has to decide exactly where to build the wall that separates them, kind of like marking a line before you cut a piece of paper. Researchers studying a small mustard plant called Arabidopsis found that a protein named HYADE, normally known for helping cells recycle old parts, actually works a completely different job: it helps deliver building materials to the right spot so the new cell wall lands in the correct place. When this protein doesn't work properly, the dividing line ends up in the wrong spot entirely, showing that cells need reliable delivery trucks, not just recycling trucks, to divide correctly.
