Leftover corn stalks become water filters and soil boosters

The corn stalks and cobs typically burned or left to rot after harvest can instead be turned into a soil additive that helps your own vegetable beds grow stronger seedlings.
Researchers took the leftover parts of corn plants, the stalks and cobs, and heated or chemically treated them to make different types of charcoal-like carbon materials. Some of these materials turned out to be great at soaking up pollutants from water, while others, especially ones treated with calcium carbonate, made excellent soil additives that helped corn seedlings grow better. It's a neat example of turning farm waste into something genuinely useful for both cleaning up water and improving soil.

Corn stalks and cobs were converted into biochars and activated carbons using microwave pyrolysis, urea or calcium carbonate impregnation, and CO2 activation.
The resulting materials showed high sorption capacity for removing both organic and inorganic contaminants from water.
Calcium carbonate-modified biochar was the most effective soil amendment for supporting corn seedling growth.
