Crushed concrete waste gets a biochar boost so plants can grow in it

If you've ever tried to plant something in compacted rubble or poor construction fill, this shows how a pinch of biochar and a plant-derived gum can turn dead debris into a rooting medium that actually supports seedlings.
Leftover crushed concrete from demolished buildings is usually too dense and dry for plants to take root in, which makes it hard to reuse as a soil-like cover for landfills or reclaimed sites. Scientists found that blending in a small amount of biochar (charred plant material) and gellan gum (a natural thickener) helped seeds germinate nearly three times better and grow taller, while also making the material hold more water and resist crumbling under stress. Too much biochar backfired, but a 5% biochar and 1% gum mix hit the sweet spot for both plant growth and structural strength.

Combined biochar and gellan gum treatment raised saturated water content by 59% and air-entry value by 300%, while cutting water permeability by about 85%
