Adding sand to salty clay soil unlocks better drainage

If you've ever fought a patch of soggy, crusty, salt-stubborn soil in a garden bed or community plot, this shows a low-tech fix, mixing in coarse sand, can physically reopen the drainage pathways that salt and clay have sealed shut.

Some farmland soils get so packed with clay and salt that water just sits on top instead of draining through, which makes it nearly impossible to grow anything. Researchers found that stirring in river sand of a specific grain size, at about 20-30% of the soil volume, opens up connected channels underground so water can carry the salt away much faster. Add too much sand past roughly 30%, though, and the soil's structural behavior shifts in a different, less predictable direction.
