Plant compound quiets bacterial chatter to fight lung infections

The same plant chemistry that gives pine forests and herb gardens their scent is showing up as a lead ingredient in next-generation infection fighters, a reminder that the compounds in ordinary plants often do more than smell good.

Pseudomonas bacteria, a common cause of drug-resistant lung infections, coordinate their attacks by 'talking' to each other using chemical signals. Researchers found that verbenol, a compound naturally made by plants, jams that communication system so the bacteria can't organize biofilms, toxins, or the ability to swim toward host tissue. In mice, this calmed lung infections and inflammation without the toxic side effects that come from trying to kill the bacteria outright.
