Wheat pollen's hidden genetic switches could unlock hybrid breeding

The bread on your table depends on wheat that mostly pollinates itself, and this research maps the exact genes that could finally make cross-breeding wheat practical enough to boost yields worldwide.

Wheat flowers are famously shy: they mostly fertilize themselves instead of mixing with pollen from other plants, which makes it hard to breed better hybrid varieties. Researchers tracked exactly when and where wheat pollen matures inside the flower spike, found that pollen stays healthiest at room temperature rather than in the fridge, and pinpointed specific spots on the wheat genome that control how much pollen a plant makes and how long it survives. One wheat variety, called Piko, carries especially helpful versions of these genes.
